In Defense of Low Calorie Desserts
As a registered dietitian and nutritionist, I have noticed that the topic of low calorie desserts, or really low calorie anything, has been taboo among the community.
I have always wanted to share my personal love for enjoying a sensible sweet treat before bed, like my favorite So Delicious Dairy Free Mousse, but I didn’t want to be perceived as promoting ‘dieting’ or disordered eating behaviors.
With my latest declaration to be more transparent and authentic about the things I care about, I figured it would be the perfect time to talk about something I’ve always wanted to discuss: low calorie desserts & the role they play in living a healthy lifestyle.
You may hear the common message that is repeated, “Just have a small bit of the real stuff and truly enjoy it”.
Fair enough, that is great if a small bit of the real stuff has always satisfied you.
But I’ve always asked myself:
- What if I wanted to enjoy more than just a little bit at a time?
- What if I wanted to enjoy it more often than just sometimes?
- What if I truly enjoy the taste of low-calorie frozen desserts?
- And what if they actually help me to to maintain my healthy lifestyle?
Bad Habit or Comforting Ritual?
I have loved eating dessert before bed before it even was recognized as a ‘bad habit’.
I remember getting out of a late night work shift at the restaurant and heading down to the convenience store to pick up a pint of ice cream, enjoying the entire thing to myself before falling asleep (several times each week).
Of course, I knew it was not the healthiest thing for me, but my college metabolism had no problem keeping up with my choices. I enjoyed the experience, and at the time, that was good enough for me.
As metabolism and life changes, eventually I found myself struggling with my ‘dessert before bed five nights a week’ habit as a stressed out new mom who was dealing with health issues at the time.
I was not the only consumer who wanted a frozen dessert product that was not only delicious, but made of high-quality ingredients that can help to fuel a healthy lifestyle.
Thankfully So Delicious is there to fill that gap.

After trying just about every frozen dessert on the market, I knew it was love at first taste when I tried the So Delicious Dairy Free Mousse.
I had finally found a frozen dessert that was creamy, fluffy and dairy-free.
And for 330 or fewer calories in the whole pint, I knew I found a dessert that I could enjoy, in it’s entirety (if I wanted), without feeling poorly afterwards – mentally or physically.
Low Calorie Desserts & Living a Healthy Lifestyle
I believe that everyone has a different definition on what is ‘healthy’ for them and their lifestyle. What could be healthy for one, could be very unhealthy for another, and that is an important thing to remember.
For me, finding a delicious product like the So Delicious Dairy Free Mousse has been a helpful asset in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
I enjoy the ability to have enjoy a dessert that looks and tastes beautiful, and is made with thoughtful, dairy-free ingredients.
I never feel deprived, I never feel sluggish or uncomfortable the next day, and I never feel guilty about enjoying something that has been a comforting ritual for me for nearly ten years.
Thanks to So Delicious Dairy Free Mousse, the only thing I need to worry about is which delicious flavor I want to enjoy next.
With seven incredibly tasty flavors swirled with the subtle hint of coconut oil, it can be hard to pick just one from the selection of: Salted Caramel Swirl, Cranberry Cherry Swirl, Strawberry Swirl, Peanut Butter Swirl, Chocolate Chip, Lemon Swirl and Mango Swirl.
Just remember, it is not wrong or shameful to enjoy a low-calorie desert, just like it is not wrong and shameful to enjoy a high-calorie dessert.
Ultimately, at the end of the day what you choose to eat should nourish you and make you feel good mentally and physically.
Worry less about the labels, and more about the eating experience, and everything will fall into place.
