Why You Will Love This Recipe
You know that strong-smelling cream you rub on your chest to ease cold and flu symptoms? You’re going to love this recipe because it transforms a common medicine cabinet staple into a clean, natural alternative that works just as well, if not better.
A few years ago, during a tough flu season, I grabbed for that trusted blue jar but hesitated after reading the label and realizing I couldn’t pronounce half the ingredients.
Already committed to a more holistic lifestyle, I saw an opportunity to create something cleaner, blending the congestion-clearing power of eucalyptus with the anti-inflammatory benefits of cannabis, which I’d already come to love in topicals for managing pain.
This all-natural vapor rub feels soothing, smells fresh, and avoids the petroleum and synthetic chemicals found in commercial versions, plus, it’s just so satisfying to make something effective with ingredients you trust.
With cannabis-infused coconut oil or FECO/RSO, and the luxurious touch of shea butter for a non-greasy, nurturing texture, this recipe is forgiving, effective, and incredibly comforting, a little act of self-care that’s perfect when you’re feeling under the weather.

Cannabis-Infused Vapor Rub
What You Need
- 3 ounces shea butter
- 1 ounce cannabis-infused coconut oil Alternatively, you can use 1 ounce of regular coconut oil mixed with 1 gram of FECO or RSO.
- 20 drops eucalyptus essential oil
- 10 drops peppermint essential oil
- 10 drops lavender essential oil
- 1 mL Full Extract Cannabis Oil (FECO) or Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) optional
Instructions
- Fill the bottom pot of your double boiler with an inch or two of water and bring it to a gentle simmer over low heat.
- Place the 3 ounces shea butter the 1 ounce cannabis-infused coconut oil into the top pan of the double boiler (or your heat-safe bowl).
- Allow the oils to melt completely. Stir occasionally to ensure they combine evenly. Keep the heat low to preserve the beneficial compounds in the cannabis and shea butter.
- Once the mixture is entirely liquid and lump-free, turn off the heat and carefully remove the top pan/bowl. Wipe the bottom of the bowl to prevent water from dripping into your mixture.
- If using, add the 1 mL Full Extract Cannabis Oil (FECO) or Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) and stir well.
- Let the mixture cool for just a minute or two, you want it warm but not scalding hot. Add the 20 drops eucalyptus essential oil, 10 drops peppermint essential oil, and 10 drops lavender essential oil. Stir well to distribute the oils evenly throughout the mixture.
- Carefully pour the liquid mixture into your clean 4-ounce glass jar.
- Allow the vapor rub to sit at room temperature until it cools and re-hardens completely. If you are in a hurry, you can place the jar in the refrigerator for 30–60 minutes to speed up the process.
- Seal the jar tightly. Store your vapor rub in a cool, dark place out of direct sunlight.

What You’ll Need
Let’s break down exactly why we chose these specific ingredients for our home remedy.
- 3 ounces Shea Butter: Extracted from the nut of the African shea tree, this is a fat that is solid at room temperature but melts at body temperature. It is rich in vitamins A and E and is incredibly moisturizing, making it the perfect vehicle for a chest rub.
- 1 ounce Cannabis-Infused Coconut Oil: This is the “active” ingredient for our purposes. Cannabinoids like THC and CBD are fat-soluble, meaning they bind perfectly with the fatty acids in coconut oil and shea butter. When applied topically, they interact with receptors in the skin to potentially provide localized relief from pain and inflammation without entering the bloodstream to cause a “high.”
- 1mL FECO or RSO: If you don’t have infused oil, you can simply dissolve 1 gram of FECO (Full Extract Cannabis Oil) or RSO (Rick Simpson Oil) into the warm shea butter.
- 20 Drops Eucalyptus Essential Oil: This is the star of the show for congestion. It contains a compound called eucalyptol, which has been shown to help break up mucus and expand airways.
- 10 Drops Peppermint & Lavender: While optional, these add layers of relief. Peppermint contains menthol, which provides a cooling sensation that distracts from aches. Lavender is well-known for its calming properties, which is exactly what you need when you’re trying to sleep off a cold.

The Step-by-Step Process
- Prepare the Double Boiler: Fill the bottom pot of your double boiler with an inch or two of water and bring it to a gentle simmer over low heat.
- Melt the Base: Place the 3 ounces (85g) of shea butter and the 1 ounce (28g) of cannabis-infused coconut oil into the top pan of the double boiler (or your heat-safe bowl).
- Heat Gently: Allow the oils to melt completely. Stir occasionally to ensure they combine evenly. Keep the heat low to preserve the beneficial compounds in the cannabis and shea butter.
- Optional: If using, add the 1 mL Full Extract Cannabis Oil (FECO) or Rick Simpson Oil (RSO) and stir well.
- Remove from Heat: Once the mixture is entirely liquid and lump-free, turn off the heat and carefully remove the top pan/bowl. Wipe the bottom of the bowl to prevent water from dripping into your mixture.

Why Cannabis Topicals Are Great For Relief
When I first started exploring cannabis topicals, I was skeptical. How could putting cannabis on my skin help me feel better?
The science lies in the endocannabinoid system (ECS). We have ECS receptors all over our bodies, including in our skin tissue. When you apply cannabis-infused vapor rub to your chest, the cannabinoids bind to these local receptors.
While the eucalyptus works on your sinuses, the CBD and THC in the rub can work to reduce localized inflammation and soothe the aches and pains that often accompany the flu. It’s a multi-pronged approach to feeling better: aromatherapy for the nose, and cannabinoids for the body.
Additional Factors to Consider
- Shelf Life: Since this recipe contains no water, it is shelf-stable. However, essential oils can degrade over time. For the best potency, try to use your vapor rub within 6–12 months.
- Texture Changes: Shea butter can sometimes become “grainy” if it cools too slowly or fluctuates in temperature. This doesn’t affect the medicinal quality, but if you prefer a smooth texture, cooling it quickly in the fridge usually prevents this.
- Potency: The strength of your rub depends entirely on the strength of your infused oil. Since topicals are non-intoxicating, you don’t need to worry about “overdosing,” but a stronger infusion may provide better relief for deep muscle aches.
Notes & Expert Tips
- Customize the Scent: You can replace the eucalyptus oil in this recipe with rosemary oil or tea tree oil if you prefer. Use whichever one you like best or whatever you have on hand. Ginger oil is another great addition, it promotes circulation, which can be comforting when you have the chills. Learn more about different types of carrier oils here.
- Handling the Heat: Be careful when pouring the hot oil into your jar! I always recommend using oven mitts and pouring over a paper towel to catch drips.
- Safety for Children: Caution is advised here. Peppermint and Eucalyptus oils can be too strong for young children (generally under age 6 or 10, depending on the oil). If making this for young kids, stick to Lavender oil and consult a pediatrician, or use a “kid-safe” blend of essential oils.

Frequently Asked Questions
No. Generally speaking, cannabis topicals do not penetrate the bloodstream deep enough to cause intoxicating effects. You can apply this rub to your chest without worrying about feeling intoxicated.
Absolutely. If you prefer to avoid THC entirely, you can use a CBD-dominant flower to make your coconut oil, or simply mix in a CBD isolate or distillate into the shea butter.
Shea butter and coconut oil both have relatively low melting points. If you leave your jar in a hot car or in direct sunlight on a warm day, it will turn back into a liquid. Simply pop it in the fridge to re-solidify it.
Apply a nickel-sized dollop onto the chest and throat and rub in completely. It is especially helpful at bedtime when congestion seems to act up more. You can also rub it on the soles of your feet and put on socks, an old wives’ tale that many swear by for cough relief!
In Conclusion
By incorporating this natural remedy into your self-care routine, you’ll be taking a simple, plant-based approach to supporting your respiratory health and overall well-being.
Whether applied during the day or as part of your bedtime routine, this soothing blend is easy to use and made with wellness in mind.

What I did last year (my first time ever needing a vapor rub in adult life and I needed it for my toddler) was just put some eucalyptus oil drops in a sweet almond oil carrier and put it in a glass jar. I used it for many days and it was fine. It’s still fine, actually. So, if folks don’t want to melt down the shea and have to wait for it to cool, they can use other carrier oils, too. Just a tip.
For sure! Eucalyptus is the star of the show.
