Instructions

  • It is important to calibrate your candy thermometer and prepare your workstation ahead of time, before starting the cooking process. I recommend you put the lollipop molds on a baking tray and add the sticks to the molds. This is very important because the recipe can be tricky to work with as the sugar heats up and hardens very quickly.
  • Add the sugar, corn syrup, and water to a heavy-duty 1-quart saucepan. Place over medium heat and then stir until the sugar dissolves.
  • Attach the candy thermometer to the side of the pan, ensuring the bottom of the thermometer does not touch the bottom of the pan.
  • Allow the mixture to come to a boil. Do not stir. If sugar crystals form on the sides of the pan, wash them down with a wet silicone brush.
  • Continue to allow the mixture to cook until the temperature reaches 260°F.
  • Without stirring, drop in your desired amount of food coloring (2-5 drops). Continue to allow the mixture to cook, watching the temperature carefully.
  • When the temperature reaches exactly 300°F, remove the pan from the heat.
  • When the boiling has ceased, add in your reduced tincture and flavoring. Stir well. Be careful when pouring the tincture into the hot sugar, rising steam may cause burns.
  • Carefully pour the mixture into molds and put the lollipop sticks in place. If there is extra, pour it onto parchment paper for candy. Let cool completely.
  • Once cool, wrap the lollipops in bags and secure them with twist ties.
  • Enjoy! Store in a cool, dry place if not enjoyed immediately.

Notes

Clean-Up Tip: This process is sticky, and once cooled, the hardened sugar will be very difficult to get off your pan and utensils. The easiest way to clean them is to soak them in hot, soapy water until all the sugar has dissolved.
High Altitude Note: My reader Christy notes, “Since water boils at a lower temp in high altitudes, don’t forget to decrease your temps in this recipe. I follow the “2 degrees for every 1,000 feet above sea level” rule. I’m am 6,500 ft so I reduce the temp by 13 degrees. So for instance, instead of my candy going to 260 degrees, mine should go to 247 degrees. And 287 instead of 300. This has solved my problem of my candy being ridiculously hard to work with! I was overcooking!”

What You’ll Need

An ingredients collage on a white countertop featuring all of the ingredients needed to make cannabis lollipops including food coloring, sugar, corn syrup, tincture, flavoring and water.
  • granulated sugar: This is required to add sweetness to the lollipop. You could use cannabis sugar here for your infusion option if you don’t want to use a tincture.
  • lite corn syrup:  This ingredient is necessary for this recipe; I do not have a substitution recommendation. You can find this at the grocery store.
  • water
  • alcohol-based cannabis tincture: This ingredient is what infuses this recipe. This needs to be an alcohol-based tincture; it cannot be an oil-based tincture. It is recommended to evaporate 80-90% of the alcohol before making this recipe.
  • 5-10 drops of food coloring: Use fun and creative color combinations. You can use all-natural food coloring if desired.
  • LorAnn flavoring oil: Customize this to whatever you like! Strawberry lime? Sounds great! Coconut pineapple? Totally doable. Choose from these flavoring options here.

Note: The recipe card below has a complete list of ingredients with amounts and printable instructions.

Step-by-Step Instructions

A 4 step collage showing the first four steps in making lollipops. 1- setting up your work station, 2 - stirring the ingredients, 3- the pan at 260
  • Step 1 – There are few steps to take ahead of time to make this recipe go as smooth as possible. 1. Calibrate your thermometer and prepare your workstation ahead of time. 2. Put the molds on a baking tray and the sticks in the molds. 3. Evaporate 80-90% of the alcohol from your tincture. All three steps are very important. Once you get started, this entire process can be tricky to work with, as the sugar heats up and hardens very quickly.
  • Step 2 – Add the sugar, corn syrup, and water to a medium saucepan over medium-high heat on your heat source of choice. Stir with a silicone or metal spoon until the sugar dissolves.
  • Step 3 – Attach the candy thermometer, ensuring the bottom does not touch the pan.
  • Step 4 – Allow the mixture to come to a boil while keeping a close eye on it. Do not stir.
A 4 step collage showing steps 5-8 for making cannabis lollipops - 1 - bringing to a boil, 2 checking the temperature, 3 adding the food coloring, 4 adding the flavoring
  • Step 5 – If sugar crystals form on the sides of the pan, wash them down with a silicone or wet pastry brush.
  • Step 6 – Continue to cook until the temperature reaches 260°F.
  • Step 7 – Without stirring, drop in your desired amount of food coloring.
  • Step 8 – When the hard crack temperature of 300°F is reached, remove from the heat. When the boiling has ceased, add in your reduced tincture and flavoring. Stir well. Be careful when pouring the tincture into the hot sugar, rising steam may cause burns.

  • Step 9 – Here comes the tricky part. Carefully pour the liquid candy mixture into molds and put the lollipop sticks in place.
  • Step 10 – If there is extra, pour it on parchment paper to make easy weed candies. Work fast as the temperature drops quickly. Let cool completely.
  • Step 11 – Once cool, wrap the lollipops in bags and secure them with twist ties. Congrats, you just made your own lollipops!
  • Step 12 – Now it’s time to enjoy! If you don’t enjoy this lollipops recipe today, store them in a dry space at room temperature.

Storage Instructions

The most effective way to store these delicious weed lollipops is to wrap each sucker individually.

Store them in an airtight container in a cool spot in your pantry for up to several months.

There should be little to no weed smell this way. Do not refrigerate at any time.

Notes and Expert Tips

  • Be prepared to work quickly. Your best bet for a successful outcome is having all your ingredients and tools ready to go BEFORE starting the cooking process.
  • Get a candy thermometer and calibrate it first to degrees Fahrenheit. It is very important to have accurate temperature controls in this recipe, especially for monitoring the boiling point and reaching the hard crack stage of the sugar.
  • This process is sticky and once cooled, the hardened sugar will leave little hard candy trails and be very difficult to get off of your pan and utensils. The easiest way to clean them is to soak them in hot, soapy water until all of the stubborn hard candy has dissolved.
  • Be sure to dose your cannabis edibles appropriately. Too much of the psychoactive cannabis ingredient, THC, can make you feel unwell. While this is many people’s favorite way of consumption, it is important to take caution with this cannabis preparation method.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find the tincture recipe?

You can use either the Green Dragon or the Golden Dragon recipes. If you make a CBD-dominant tincture, you can make CBD lollipops. You can get CBD flowers from my online store.

Can I substitute the corn syrup?

No, this is the main ingredient, and you need it for this recipe to turn out correctly.

Can I make this recipe with coconut oil?

No, it is not a good idea to try and use cannabis oil in this recipe. Regardless of whether it is CBD oil or THC oil, the recipe won’t set right.

How can I help prevent the candies from sticking?

Wrap each candy individually in plastic. See the picture above for an example.

Where can I find the candy molds for this recipe?

You can use any shapes or molds that you’d like; just be sure they’re silicone! I found mine here on Amazon. They also have cannabis lollipop molds. Your local store like Walmart, Target, and Michael’s, should have molds as well.

Can I decorate this simple recipe with edible flowers?

You sure can! Adding edible flowers like rose petals is a perfect way to jazz up these easy THC lollipops recipes. Just be sure to work quickly when adding them in with the hot candy. Just note that some people may find the whole plant material unpleasant at the end.

How much cannabis extract should I use?

Each candy mold holds a different volume, so your final dosage will depend on that. This recipe makes 12 ounces. If your candy mold holds one ounce each, you will get 12 servings from this recipe. You then want to ask yourself how many mg of THC you want in your own lollipops as a single dose. If you wanted each sucker to have 5mg of THC, you would want to add 60mg of THC through the tincture. How much THC should you add? That depends on your own personal tolerance. Estimating the potency of any homemade weed edibles will always be a guess, but my edible dosage calculator can help.

Can I make just hard candies with this recipe?

Yes! You do not need to make lollipops with this simple recipe. This process is one of the main methods for making hard candies.

Is it OK to let the temperature get this hot?

Many people worry that the 300°F temperature will harm the THC, but thankfully it won’t. THC won’t boil until 315° and vaporizes at much higher temperatures. The temperature will not affect the potency of this recipe.

  1. Hello Emily, Thanks for your contributions to the Cannabis community !
After smoking flower every day for 50 years I’ve decided to stop smoking it.

I’m in California and there are lots of dispensaries in my local areas.
I love the idea of these lollipops. But I need to purchase the tincture.
And I’m having trouble finding the “cannabis ALCOHOL tincture”.

What would you recommend that could do, short of extracting from actual buds.

    What’s up with that’s cannabis butter ? Is that a possibility ?
    Thank you !

    1. Hi T Bro. Are you able to get FECO/RSO? You can add that in place of the alcohol tincture. Are you able to get 190-proof alcohol? You can make our own at home, easily. As far as cannabutter lollipops, I do believe it’s possible, but it’s not something we have experimented with. I hope this helps!

    1. Hi Lily. The strength of your lollipops depends on the strength of the cannabis product you are using in the recipe. Do you know the amount of THC that’s in your cannabis product?

  2. is it possible to substitute tincture for wax like in the gummy recipe, I saw it said no coconut oil but having not made my tincture trying to be lazy

  3. Hi EMK team,

I just made this recipe twice and made rock candy instead of the lollipops and it turned out wonderful. I had a tincture that I had reduced by about 75% that I made with trim and my candies are quite potent and delicious, and I find for me the time to take effect was only 30 minutes (but I hadn’t eaten in a few hours).

Thanks for sharing all your ideas and recipes. I love this site.

    1. Hi Denise! I love rock candy! My kids get so mad because I always take theirs. ? Thank you for sharing your technique with us!

  4. Emily,
Let me correct my question. Spell correct doesn’t like the word decarbed.
Can decarbed concentrates, like wax, etc. be used in this recipe?

Thank you so much for all the information you have available! You are GREAT!

    Thanks,
    Donanne

    1. Hi Donanne. You can absolutely use concentrates. Just add the concentrate in at the same step of adding the tincture. We truly appreciate your kind words and support! ? Enjoy!

  5. Good day Emily. When your uaeing tincture, are you meaning the vodka kind, or the cooked down tincture?thanks for this recipe!

    1. Hi Yvonne. I’m afraid the lollipops won’t set properly because you’ll have less water and the alcohol will evaporate out. You can certainly try but I would suggest making a batch without your cannabis-infused alcohol. This way you’ll know how the final product will turn out without wasting your cannabis if it doesn’t work out. I hope this helps!

  6. Do you know how long these lollipops last? Could I use citric acid as a preservative? If so, could you recommend an amount to use?

    1. Hi Miranda! These lollipops will last for several months if wrapped individually and stored in an airtight container in a cool spot in your pantry. Do not refrigerate at any time. Citric acid can be added as a preservative. Recommended usage is 1/8 teaspoon per 2 cups of sugar, so half of that if you are making just a single batch of lollipops. You’ll want to add once hot syrup has cooled to below 265º F. I hope this helps!

    Hello Obi-Wan Emily !
This recipe I just perfect. Thanks for share.
I was wondering if I can do it with FECO instead tincture. Maybe adding lecithin ? Thanks a lot!

    1. Hey Michael, yes, you can totally do this with FECO and I don’t think you would even need the lecithin. I would add the FECO at the same time you would add the tincture. Let us know how they turn out for you ?

    1. Hey Lauren, unfortunately, I don’t think that will work for this recipe. But, you’re always welcome to try with non-infused oil if you’re curious.

Hello! I’ve used your recipe once before and they turned out wonderfully! About the double boiler listed in the equipment… at what point do I use the double boiler? The instructions only state to use a saucepan. Thanks for what you do ?!

    1. Thanks so much for catching that, Nicole! I just updated the list to remove the double boiler and added the saucepan instead 🙂

  9. Hi Emily, would you happen to have a sugar free recipe for this lollipop recipe? My husband is a diabetic and I would like to make him these.
    Thanks

  10. Does the higher temperature of 300 degrees degrade the strength of the cannabis any? I was thinking I read somewhere it shouldn’t to go over 250.

    1. Hey Robyn! I haven’t ran into any issues with this recipe yet. I believe that the temperature at 300°F is not held long enough to degrade any of the cannabinoids 🙂

    1. Awesome, I am so happy to hear this recipe worked out for you so well, Carissa! Thanks for the feedback!

Could I use Honey instead of sugar in this recipe? Would I just subsitute the sugar quantity for honey?
    Thanks

    1. Hey Paula! I haven’t tried it myself, and I don’t know if honey will have the same “hard-crack” properties that sugar does to make the lollipops solid. If you try, I would use the same amount (but I would also try a virgin batch first to ensure it works out!). Let us know if you are successful 🙂
