What is CBD (Cannabidiol)?

The most common questions I get from the students in my Cannabis Compass Online Course start like this:

Does it really work? Can it really help to manage a wide variety of health conditions? Is it legal? Could CBD be a safe alternative to prescription medications that leave unwanted side-effects?

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is a plant-based compound known as a cannabinoid. It is the second most abundant of all the cannabinoids, next to THC.

CBD works because the human body contains what is known as an endocannabinoid system, which is proven to help maintain homeostasis in the body by acting as a balancing mechanism with other body systems such as the circulatory, nervous, and digestive systems. 

Cannabinoids, like CBD and THC, found in the cannabis plant, interact with our endocannabinoid systems, producing a variety of effects.

They are organic compounds found within the hemp plant that interact with endocannabinoid receptors in the human body and trigger a variety of effects.

So far, over 113 cannabinoids have been identified, including CBD and THC.

As awareness and understanding of the endocannabinoid system grows, so does our knowledge of how cannabinoids like CBD interact with the body.

What are the Benefits of Using CBD Oil?

For thousands of years, people across the world have been incorporating cannabis’s powerful anti-anxiety, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective properties into foods and medicine. 

Now, clinical research is coming out to support the therapeutic uses of CBD for both mental and physical health. 

With the most promising studies showing aid in pediatric epilepsy, scientific research and anecdotal reports indicate that CBD additionally helps with the following:

Does CBD Oil Get you High?

Can I get high from using CBD?

No, the CBD we are talking about here today is derived from the hemp plant. The hemp plant is defined as a cannabis plant containing no more than 0.3% THC.

Hemp-derived CBD oil will not produce an intoxicating ‘high’ feeling.

CBD is also legal to obtain and use in nearly every state, thanks to the passage of the 2018 Farm Bill. 

Will CBD Show On a Drug Test?

While CBD will not get you high, it could potentially cause a false-positive on a drug test.

When it comes to getting drug tested or screened, it is important to know that using a CBD product that contains any amount of THC, also known as a full-spectrum product, has the slight potential to show up in a drug test/screening. 

But don’t worry! There are options for folks who need 100% certainty.

If you are someone that needs to be free of THC, there are THC free CBD oils on the market that will still do the job. You likely find them labeled as broad-spectrum CBD or CBD isolate products.

What does It Feel Like to Use CBD?

What will it feel like to try CBD oil for the first time? 

Many people feel nothing at all when they use CBD for the first time, and that’s OK. 

Using CBD is not about what you feel, it is about what you don’t feel – a lack of anxiety, mood swings, irritability, pain, inflammation, etc. 

Many of my clients don’t even realize how much better they begin to feel each day until they miss a dose or stop their regimen. It is then that they are able to identify how the CBD is helping them manage their anxiety. 

Are There CBD Side Effects?

Again, CBD is non-intoxicating, meaning it does not give the feeling of intoxication or ‘being high’. However, that does not mean it is without side-effects.

While CBD is generally well-tolerated in large doses, potential, mild, and typically rare side-effects associated with using CBD include dry mouth, diarrhea, reduced appetite, drowsiness, and fatigue.

Can I Make My Own CBD Oil at Home?

Yes, you absolutely can make your own CBD oil at home using CBD hemp flower. I would recommend making either a CBD-infused coconut oil for a CBD dominant full-extract cannabis oil (FECO).

Step #1 – Choose Your CBD Application method

There are many different ways to consume CBD oil products. You will choose an application method by evaluating the bioavailability, onset and duration times, and comparing them to your personal lifestyle needs.

Various application methods include:

It is recommended to try all types of consumption methods to find which one is best for you. Below we will talk about each one in detail.

Sublingual Application = CBD Oil Under the Tongue

Sublingual, meaning under the tongue, involves holding CBD oil under your tongue to be absorbed.

This method is preferred due to the high bioavailability rate of ~30%, ensuring more effective absorption into the bloodstream. 

The typical onset time starts between 15-30 minutes and the typical duration time lasts for 2-4 hours. For best results, we recommend holding the oil under your tongue or inside your cheek for 60-90 seconds, or for as long as possible.

Sublingual CBD Pros & Cons:

  • Bioavailability rate: ~30%
  • Onset time: 15-30 minutes
  • Duration time: 2-4 hours
  • Effects: Systemic (circulates through the whole body)
  • Pros: High bioavailability rate, quick absorption times
  • Cons: Taste can be a problem for some people

Topical Application = CBD Oil On the SKin

Topical CBD products, or simply just CBD oil, can be applied directly to the skin at the place of discomfort for targeted relief.

Unlike sublingual absorption, topical absorption does not introduce CBD directly to the bloodstream and instead provides a localized effect. Because they do not absorb into the bloodstream, you can use topicals as often as needed throughout the day.  

Topically applied CBD interacts with the cannabinoid receptors on the skin itself, resulting in a ~30% bioavailability rate.

The typical onset time starts between 10-20 minutes and the typical duration time lasts for 2-4 hours.

Some of the most popular CBD topical products on the market place today include CBD roll-on’s, CBD salve for pain and arthritis, and CBD lotions and face creams.

Topical CBD Pros & Cons:

  • Bioavailability rate: ~30%
  • Onset time: 10-20 minutes
  • Duration time: 2-4 hours
  • Effects: Localized (does not circulate through the whole body)
  • Pros: Provides localized relief for specific areas
  • Cons: Does not provide systemic relief

Edible Application = Consuming CBD In Food and Drinks

Edibles, also known as oral consumption, involves eating CBD in food and drinks or even CBD capsules.

Eating CBD can be fun & enjoyable, and there are many different ways to cook with CBD in the kitchen.

Just remember that when CBD oil is simply swallowed it passes through the digestive system and results in a ~10% bioavailability rate which is significantly lower than the sublingual or topical absorption methods.

The typical onset time starts between 30-90 minutes and the typical duration time lasts for 4-8 hours.

Edible CBD Pros & Cons:

  • Bioavailability rate: ~6-10%
  • Onset time: 30-90 minutes
  • Duration time: 4-8 hours
  • Effects: Systemic (circulates through the whole body)
  • Pros: Long-lasting, convenient & delicious
  • Cons: Low bioavailability rate meaning that you may need to take more milligrams to achieve the desired effect

Inhalation Application = Smoking or Vaping CBD

CBD inhalation can be done by dry herb vaporizing or smoking CBD hemp flower or vaping CBD vape oil.

Inhaling CBD is the most bioavailable consumption method, with an ~31% bioavailability rate, but does come with its share of potential health drawbacks. 

Inhaled cannabis has an onset time of 1-3 minutes and the effects typically last for 1-3 hours.

Inhalation Pros & Cons:

  • Bioavailability rate: ~31%
  • Onset time: 1-3 minutes
  • Duration time: 1-3 hours
  • Effects: Systemic (circulates through the whole body)
  • Pros: Quick-acting, high bioavailability rate
  • Cons: Potential negative effects associated with smoking, short-duration times

Step #2 – Research a Safe CBD Product

Now that you have narrowed down your desired application method to start with, now it is time to select a safe CBD product.

There are so many out there! Are they all real and safe?

Step #3 – Buy a High-Quality CBD Oil

Feeling great? Keep up with the dose that is working, or feel free to experiment as desired.

Step #5 – Keep Taking CBD Consistently

  3. Purchase a high-quality CBD oil with verified 3rd party lab testing. All of my products come with a 1mL measured dropper to help with accurate dosing. If your product did not come with a 1mL measured dropper, get one.
