I certainly love kiwi but have never had a SunGold kiwifruit until this awesome recipe contest opened up, courtesy of The Recipe Redux and the Zespri Kiwifruit company. The company tagline, Taste the Difference, is most appropriate, as these are the tastiest kiwis I have ever had!
A yellow kiwi?
That’s right! Unlike the traditional green, fuzzy kiwis you have seen in the grocery store before, these SunGolds are a non-GMO, natural cross between different varieties of gold kiwifruit. The bright yellow flesh inside has a tropical-sweet taste, and you may be surprised by the smooth, hairless skin on the outside.
How to enjoy a Kiwifruit?
I used to be intimidated by kiwi, a loooong time ago, before I realized that I was eating them all wrong! If you have ever tried to peel a kiwifruit before, you know how frustrating it can be to try and gently peel off the skin without losing most of the fruit. But the truth is, you don’t peel kiwifruit! Simply cut it in half with a knife and scoop out the fruit with a spoon! Ta-da, how easy was that? Now you know 😉
SunGold Summer Squash Smoothie
If we are friends on Instagram, you know that my summer squash harvest has been out of control this season! We have been harvesting a good 20 zucchini and yellow squash a day, and while I have given a lot of it away, I still have about 30 squash sitting on my dining room table. I have had no choice but to get creative in using them up, which is what led me to the creation of this smoothie.
And I’m not going to lie, the summer squash makes an excellent smoothie base as it absorbs the flavor of the other ingredients and has a creamy, smooth texture.
The one thing I love is eating (or drinking) food that I know will serve my body well!
This smoothie has so many good-for-you ingredients inside that all come together in a tasty, refreshing smoothie. This smoothie has everything from complex carbohydrates in the oatmeal to omega 3 fatty acids in the chia seeds. One serving (2 kiwifruit) of SunGold provides three times more vitamin C than an orange and as much potassium as a medium banana. SunGold is a good source of antioxidant vitamin E and the turmeric and cinnamon are powerful anti-inflammatory agents.
Basically, this smoothie will leave you glowing 😉

I know you’re dying to know how this unique smoothie tastes! I shared this smoothie on my Healthy Summertime Smoothies segment for Good Day Rochester, and Doug loved it! Just watch the clip below 🙂
- 1 small yellow summer squash quartered and frozen
- 3 Zespri SunGold Kiwifruit
- 1/3 of a cup of oatmeal
- 2 tablespoons of chia seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 cup milk of choice
Wash and quarter the summer squash. Place in the freezer at least 2 hours or until frozen.
Use a spoon to scoop out the Kiwifruit.
Add the squash and kiwifruit to the blender.
Add the rest of the ingredients.
Blend until smooth.
