Brownie Batter:

  • ¾ cup all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ cup cannabutter or oil room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar or cannabis sugar
  • ¼ cup brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Optional Toppings:

  • 2 Tablespoons chocolate chips
  • 2 Tablespoons crushed walnuts
  • teaspoon flaked sea salt

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (177°C). Grease an 8"x8" glass or metal baking pan and set it aside.
  • In a medium-sized bowl, sift the flour and cocoa powder to remove any lumps. Add the salt, followed by the baking powder. Mix all ingredients together well. Set aside.
  • In a separate medium-sized bowl, cream the cannabutter, granulated white, and brown sugar together with a hand mixer.
  • Add the eggs and vanilla to the creamed sugar and beat on medium speed for one minute. The mixture's color should lighten a bit.
  • Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and beat on low speed until everything is well incorporated.
  • Transfer the batter to the reserved greased baking pan. Lightly tap the pan to even out the batter.
  • If you are adding any optional toppings, like sea salt, add them now.
  • Place the pan in the oven to bake for 25-30 minutes. The time will depend on your oven and your brownie consistency preferences. Test the finished brownies with a toothpick *see notes below.
  • If you can wait, allow the brownies to cool for 30 minutes before cutting into squares.

Notes

  • Consistency note: For even FUDGIER brownies, use a 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour instead of 3/4 cup.
  • Baking note: Unlike making a cake, the toothpick does NOT need to come out clean. Making fudgy brownies will leave deliciousness on the toothpick. Just verify that what is in the toothpick doesn’t have a batter consistency, indicating that the batter needs to be baked a bit longer.

What You’ll Need

A few ingredient notes worth knowing:

  • Flour: Plain all-purpose white flour works best here.
  • Baking powder: Make sure it’s baking powder — don’t confuse it for baking soda.
  • Cannabutter: Soften it to room temperature first. Using ½ cup of Bliss cannabutter results in about 33mg THC per brownie — use the dosing chart below to dial in your preferred dose.
  • Sugar swaps: You can substitute cannabis sugar for the white sugar if you like. No brown sugar on hand? Use 1½ cups of white sugar total instead.

Calculating your own dose from flower

If you’re infusing your own butter or oil from raw cannabis (rather than using Bliss), here’s the simple math to estimate your dose:

  • Step 1: Find your flower’s THC percentage (it’s usually on the label).
  • Step 2: Multiply the grams of cannabis you used by that percentage to get the total milligrams of THC in the batch. Example: 1 gram of 20% THC flower = 1,000mg × 0.20 = roughly 200mg THC for the whole pan.
  • Step 3: Divide that total by the number of brownies to get the dose per piece. Example: 200mg ÷ 9 brownies ≈ 22mg per brownie.

Keep in mind this is an estimate on the high side. Some THC is naturally lost during decarbing, infusing, and baking, so your real-world dose is usually a bit lower — which is exactly why it’s smart to round up and start with a small portion. When in doubt, start low and go slow.

For the most accurate dosing, weigh your cannabis on a digital scale that measures to the tenth of a gram (0.1g). Eyeballing flower is the easiest way to end up with a stronger batch than you intended.

  • Step 10 – Place the pan on a center rack in the oven and bake for 25-30 minutes. The bake time will depend on your oven and your brownie consistency preferences. Test the finished brownies with a toothpick *See baking notes below.
  • Step 11 – If you can wait, allow the pan of brownies to cool for 30 minutes on a wire rack before cutting them into nine squares.

Storage Instructions

Store these delicious pot brownies in an airtight container for up to seven days at room temperature.

Storing these brownies in an air-tight container with a slice of bread will keep them soft and moist.

For longer-term storage, individually wrap the brownies in parchment paper, then plastic wrap, and then place them in the refrigerator or freezer.

Cannasugar

You can make these brownies with cannabis-infused sugar; swap the infused sugar for white or brown sugar. 

You could also use infused oil or butter and infused sugar for extra potent brownies.

Cannabis Concentrates

All cannabis concentrates can work in this recipe, including distillate, shatter, wax, FECO, or RSO.

Just be sure to check if your concentrate needs to be decarbed first.

Then, mix the concentrate with ½ cup of butter or coconut oil and prepare the recipe according to the instructions below.

How much you will add is up to you and your taste preferences; 1 ml or 1 gram is a standard place to start.

Cannabis Tinctures

If you want to use an alcohol-based tincture like the Green or Golden dragon, I recommend evaporating the alcohol and making FECO first.

If you want to use an oil-based tincture, use it in place of the butter or oil mentioned above.

Decarbed Flower

You can absolutely just add ground decarbed cannabis flower or kief to this recipe by mixing it into the dry ingredients.

Don’t forget to decarb first if you want the activated benefits of THC or CBD.

Leftover Cannabis Pulp

If you want, you can add the leftover cannabis pulp to your brownie mix.

Add ¼ to ½ cup of leftover pulp to the prepared chocolate batter as an additional ingredient.

Just know that the plant matter may affect the final texture of this recipe.

Baking Tips

  • These chocolatey brownies are already fudgy, but for even FUDGIER brownies, use ½ cup of all-purpose flour instead of ¾ cup. Skip this if you prefer cakey brownies.
  • The cannabutter should be softened to room temperature for the best results in the creaming process. You don’t want to use melted butter; you want to be softened. Learn how to soften cannabutter safely.
  • When measuring flour or cocoa powder, use a spoon to transfer the flour from the container to your measuring cup and then level it out with a flat edge, like a butter knife. This helps prevent packing and makes for better brownies.
  • The baking process is not perfect. All ovens bake at different temperatures; 25 minutes is the average baking time. Some ovens will bake quicker, so check your brownies for your desired doneness with a toothpick. The toothpick does NOT need to come out clean, unlike making a cake. Making fudgy brownies will leave deliciousness on the toothpick. Just verify that what is in the toothpick doesn’t have a batter consistency, indicating that the batter needs to be baked a bit longer. Adjust accordingly to find your perfect texture.

Notes and Expert Tips

  • Know your dose: If you have never had edibles before, know they can affect you differently than other consumption methods like smokingtopicals, or tinctures. Your experience may also differ if you use an Indica or Sativa strain.
  • Be patient: Edibles take 30 minutes to several hours to hit and can last 6-12 hours, so don’t reach for that second helping so quickly! You want to make sure your high time is a good time. Discover what to do if you accidentally get too high.
  • Be safe: One of the most important things about cannabis edibles is to follow the golden rule, start low and go SLOW. Keeping your mg of THC low is the best way to stay safe. Do not eat an entire batch of marijuana brownies in one sitting, no matter how much you love the flavor of your homemade weed brownies. One more habit worth keeping: if you’re sharing these, always label them clearly and tell people they’re infused before they dig in. Everyone deserves to know exactly what they’re eating and to choose their own dose.

Is it OK to bake these brownies at such a high oven temperature?

Yes, it is OK to bake these brownies at the high temperature of 350°F (177°C), you do not need to switch to low heat.

Can I use a store-bought brownie mix?

Yes, you sure can! A typical box of brownie mix calls for ½ cup or ⅔ cup of butter or vegetable oil. Just swap that vegetable oil for your desired amount of Bliss cannabutter and follow the package instructions.

Will making cannabis brownies make my house smell?

The smell will be significantly reduced if you already have prepared oil or butter and are not actively decarbing or infusing.

What are the effects of cannabis brownies?

Cannabis edibles affect every person differently because of our unique endocannabinoid systems (ECS). This, paired with our physiology, means we will experience the effects differently. Some of the most commonly reported effects include a feeling of intoxication or being high, sleepiness, drowsiness, happiness, pain relief, calmness, and more.

How much cannabis should I use?

The potency will depend on the strength of your flower and how much weed you used, so feel free to use my flower-to-oil ratio guide and the edibles dosage calculator to make a guesstimate. Making your product with trim or shake will be less potent than making your cannabis oil or butter with premium, high-quality flowers or kief. Remember, the better the bud, the better the butter.

How do I make more potent cannabis brownies?

One way to quickly increase the THC levels is by adding concentrates or kief. Just be mindful of how much THC you add, as everyone has a different tolerance. The last thing you want to do is accidentally consume too many milligrams of THC and feel unwell.

    The very first recipe I found when I did my on line search and boy did I luck out – this is a great recipe and the brownies turned out fantastic! Once I nailed down the exact cooking time in my oven after a couple batches, they’re perfect every time now. Everybody I’ve shared them with has loved them. Still good well after 6 months too (I freeze wrapped them in food saver bags on baking day), although maybe a little less potent. Many thanks!

    1. Hi Lynn. Absolutely, cannabis oil is a great alternative to cannabis butter in brownie recipes. When substituting, you’ll want to use a 1:1 ratio. This recipe calls for a 1/2 cup of butter, so you’ll want to use a 1/2 cup of oil. Happy baking!

    I’ve been making them now for a out a year with this recipe. I have to use all dark chocolate because of my niece’s allergies but OH SO GOOD! I make them with And without the cannabutter. It is now my goto brownie recipe or I’m in hot water!?

  5. Hi Emily. First timer here to making edibles. The written recipe says to use 1/2 cup of canna butter but video shows oil. Just wondering if there is a difference. Also if I use boxed brownie mix do I just replace the oil/ butter with “canna” or continue to follow your recipe. Any info will be helpful. Thank you

    1. Hi Janet! It’s really a matter of personal preference and how strong you want your brownies. You can use cannabutter for the full 3/4 cup or you can divide it up with regular butter as you see fit. You want to make sure you have 3/4 cup of butter total though or it throws off the recipe.     I melted my cannabutter when making my brownies and I think it made my measurements off. Those brownies tasted delicious but the high was too high. Cut the pan into 9th and only had half of a brownie.

    1. Hello Lucy. Is the “funny smell” a result of using bad or expired butter or a result of cooking with cannabis? In most cases, when you cook with cannabis, you will have some level of a cannabis taste and smell in your final product.

  9. If I double the batch can this allow me to make a 13×9 instead of a 8×8 and what would the cook time difference be?

    1. Hi Katie! The area of a 13×9 pan is 117 square inches. The area of a 8×8 pan is 64 square inches, which is close to half of a 13×9 pan. To go from a 8×8 pan to a 13×9 pan, you double the recipe and because there’s not a major difference in the depth, there’s no need to adjust the oven temperature or cooking time. I hope that helps!
